On 8 June, 2011, Google, Facebook, Yahoo!, Akamai and Limelight Networks will be amongst some of the major organisations that will offer their content over IPv6 for a 24-hour “test flight”. The goal of the Test Flight Day is to motivate organizations across the industry – Internet service providers, hardware makers, operating system vendors and web companies – to prepare their services for IPv6 to ensure a successful transition as IPv4 addresses run out.
Closer to home, Dimension Data New Zealand and FX Networks are already supporting more than a dozen government agencies with a IPV6 ready Internet Gateway service. Two dozen agencies have also subscribed to the fully IPv6 enabled private WAN service.
CEO of Dimension Data NZ, Robin Hartendorp, explained, “We have been providing network solutions in New Zealand for over 30 years. During this time we have supported clients through some major technology milestones. Migration to IPv6 is a significant transition and it is critical that all organisations ready themselves for this change. We are pleased that the government agencies are leading the way in this IPv6 initiative.”
Robert White, Department of Internal Affairs, added “We are encouraging agencies to make their publically available web sites IPv6 accessible. An IPv6 ready Internet link is a key enabler and one.govt services allows them to do just that”.
Jamie Baddeley of FX Networks added, “It is great to see Government agencies connected to both the IPv6 and IPV4 internet via the FX Internet Backbone on World IPv6 day. This wouldn’t have been possible without the one.govt initiative.”
